The law is unclear on a tenant’s entitlement to use a mailbox or have shared or exclusive access to the property’s mailbox. They clearly have a right to privacy, but this cannot be guaranteed in circumstances where several tenants must share a mailbox. Although the lease may spell out the rights at the outset, if a renter thinks that their privacy is being violated, they may feel compelled to request keys to the communal mailbox or a private box. Specific criteria for mailboxes will be spelt forth in municipal ordinances.

• Mail boxes must face outward and be located on the right side of the roadway.
• Either the front or flag-side of the mailbox must have the box number or address in numerals or letters that are at least 1 inch tall.
• Mailboxes must be 6 to 8 inches from the curb, with the slot or door 40 to 46 inches above the ground.
• The depth of burying mailbox posts shall not exceed 24 inches.
Slots in the Door
Rather than having a mailbox, some houses and flats have a mail hole in the door. According to these are the requirements for an authorised door slot:
• The opening should be at least 12 x 7 inches.
• The slot’s bottom must be 32 inches above the ground.
• A flap must be hinged at the top of horizontal slots.
• Vertical slots must be hinged on the door’s opposite side.

The right to receive mail in a secure manner is guaranteed to all tenants. A landlord is not permitted to tamper with a tenant’s mail delivery or peek into the mailbox of a renter.

It is unlawful to tamper with another person’s mail. If a renter believes their landlord is interfering with their mail, they have every right to denounce the person to the police.
Certain public amenities must be accessible to people with disabilities, according to the Fair Housing Act. Make appropriate adjustments to the mailbox if your renter has a handicap and is unable to collect their mail easily.
Mailboxes with a Lock
Landlords are required to offer lockable mailboxes to renters. If the lease agreement specifies that the tenant will be given a locked mailbox, the landlord must also provide the renter with the key. Remember that since it is their property, the landlord is permitted to have a duplicate of the key. A landlord, on the other hand, is prohibited from looking through or opening your mail.
If a landlord does not have a key for a locked mailbox, a renter may be required to contact and get one. The renter may also be required to pay the cost for a new mailbox key by the landlord.
